What to expect from the Fortnitemares event

Epic Games recently announced that it is bringing back its annual Halloween event for its Battle Royale, Fortnite. This will be the fifth iteration of Fortnitemares as the event was first introduced during Season 1. While this year’s theme has not yet been confirmed by Epic Games, there has been much speculation about what new updates will be added to the popular shooter, ranging from map changes and Halloween themed skins.

This Fortnitemares event is part of one of the first major updates for Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 4, also known as ‘Paradise’. The update has already seen some innovative new mechanics such as chrome blobs, pet petting animals, and chrome tornadoes, but what players can expect in terms of Halloween themed festivities could be very different from what they’ve already experienced. Still, old favorites, like curvaceous skins, and new experiences are pretty much guaranteed.

Fortnite delivers on Spooky Skins

Fortnite has always done well putting out annual holiday-inspired events, with the Winterfest and Fortnitemares occasions among the most popular. Looks like some Halloween skins are already doing the rounds in the Fortnite Item Shop, including Skull Trooper, Skull Ranger, Wrath, Peely Bone, and other spooky skins.

While bringing back favorite skins from the past is typically appreciated, Epic Games has also confirmed that at least two new skins will be coming to the store. This information comes via a Tweet from May, in which: Fortnite announced two winners of their skin design competition. Both Sinister Glare and Undying Sorrow skins are expected to debut in the Fortnite Item Shop within the next few weeks, likely before October 18, and will likely cost around 1,200 V-Bucks per character.

Epic Games May Add New Weapons

In terms of game, Fortnite will likely follow the blueprint of recent years and include terrifying fogs that can obscure a player’s vision, new game modes, zombies, new weapons, and challenges that can be completed in exchange for rewards. The Fortnitemares occasion in 2021 was called “Wrath of the Cube Queen”, with the Cube Queen rearranging various parts of the island, dealing major damage. A new melee weapon, the Sideways Scythe, was introduced at this event. While there’s no real confirmation, many fans are sure that at least one new weapon will be dropped this year.

While this new weapon could be the unreleased Explosive Goo Gun, which was featured at the end of the Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4 Battle Pass Trailer, leaks from Twitter user HYPEX indicate it might be something completely different. The user has discovered that there is allegedly a new type of ammunition called “Phantom Ammo” in Fortnite’s code, which doesn’t sound like something that can be used with any type of goo gun.

Players can look forward to a new Fortnite boss

Based on the tagline for the event, “This is the season of screams, bad dreams and all things monstrous”, players may want to prepare for the introduction of new monsters into the game, which may appear randomly on the map. Many speculate that the boss fight will be against a sinister wolf-like character, in part because Epic Games’ Fortnitemares announcement video depicted the outline of a wolf-shaped animal with glowing eyes.

Another theory suggests that the Chrome elements of Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4 will have something to do with the Fortnitemares event of 2022, where monsters evolve from the substance to randomly attack players. Such events may ultimately involve The Herald, a mysterious and menacing antagonist who was revealed during the Chapter 3 Season 3 cinematic intro as the one who controls the Chrome and is clearly plotting against the island. However, it may also be the case that Fortnite will want to save the Herald for a period closer to the end of this season.

Furthermore, the above Fortnite leaker, HYPEX, also claims that whoever this new Fortnitemares boss is can summon monsters at will. When defeated, it will drop a never-before-seen mythical weapon. Other loot is expected to fall as well, such as ammunition, fireflies, consumables, and the classic Pumpkin Launcher from past Halloween events. In the past, players didn’t have to beat a boss to get a Pumpkin Launcher, which is why it’s believed that this year they can also buy it from NPCs or find it in chests.

Like previous years, the event will most likely end on November 1, giving players plenty of time to complete in-game quests and purchase time-sensitive skins as they progress through the current Fortnite battle pass. The recent patch will likely reveal more information about the Fortnitemares event, although there are certainly plenty of challenges to be completed before October 18.

Fortnite is free to play on mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
