Joan Saab, who serves as the Susan B. Anthony Professor of Art History and executive vice president of academic affairs at the University of Rochester, will serve as executive vice president for academic affairs and with the provost of the University of Richmond, on July 1.
Saab is an accomplished director and popular art history and visual culture expert with more than 20 years of education and elected leadership in Rochester, where he currently serves as dean. interim faculty of Arts, Science, & Engineering.

During his time at Rochester, Saab served as director of the graduate program in Visual and Cultural Studies and chair of the Department of Art and Art History. His areas of study and research include 19th- and 20th-century American cultural studies, American cultural history, public culture and community studies, and history. sensory.

A recipient of teaching, research, and grant awards, Saab’s work has received funding from the Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Getty Research Center at UCLA, and a University of Rochester Provost’s Research Grant. His first book, For the Millions: America and Culture Between the Warsis the first volume in the “Arts and Intellectual Life in Modern America series,” published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.
His latest book, Objects of vision: Understanding what we see, part of the “Studies in Sensory History Series” at Pennsylvania State University Press. He is the author of the digital book project Looking for Siqueiros, written in Scalar platform digital edition, and editor for the Wiley Blackwell Fellow in Visual Culture. He is currently completing a manuscript entitled, Tales from the Crypt: Vincent Price and American Culture. He is a sought-after scholar and presenter at invited talks, symposia, and conferences.
Saab received her bachelor’s degree in English and art history from Tufts University, her master’s in American Civilization with an emphasis in cultural heritage and museum studies from The George Washington University, and her Ph.D. in American Studies at New York University.
Saab will succeed executive vice president and provost Jeff Legro, who announced he will step down at the end of this school year after serving in the role since 2017. Legro will remain , an international relations expert, at UR as a full member. of the teacher.
