Sherlock Season 5: Everything We Know So Far

Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss created Sherlock is a television series based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. The series gained huge popularity around the world after its premiere in 2010. Now the series has yet to be renewed for Sherlock season 5.

The Sherlock Season 4 storyline left audiences with a lot of questions, meaning there’s always a possibility for Season 5. Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat shared what Sherlock Season 5’s story could be if it happens.

Eurus Holmes is Sherlock’s long-lost or secret sister, and the fifth season may show her evil side. However, these are not the claims as BBC One has yet to renew the show for another season.

Given multiple reports released before, Sherlock season 5 has actually not been canceled and there are chances of making it. While there’s no confirmation on the fifth run being made, viewers have been given plenty of clues several times that Sherlock season 5 could happen.

Gatiss explained that the events of the fourth season’s final episode, titled The Final Problem, could actually just be the start of Season 5, while Moffat goes one step further to reveal that Sherlock Season 5 would show that Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) is back in their rooms at 221B Baker Street solving crimes.

“Our original intent for the series was to go back to the beginning and see them as younger men and… factory reset. But I think what actually happened is that we’ve now done the story of how the Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson we’ve always known, how they became those men. It’s basically a backstory,” Gatiss told Radio Times.

He added: “The reason we [ended with] Rathbone Place is that, basically, when we come back – and we’d love to come back – we can absolutely start very easily with a knock on the door and Sherlock saying to John, ‘Would you like to come out and play?’ They have become the two heroes we’ve always known.”

According to Moffat, “Sherlock finally understands that in a way he is stronger and smarter than Mycroft. But not because he is actually smarter – he is less smart – but because his emotions, his connections with other people, the wisdom he has gained through the connections he has made in the world make him stronger.”

The lead actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, is optimistic about the possibility of Sherlock season 5 extending. The actor told Collider about the possibility of Sherlock season 5 in 2021.

“I’m the worst person to ask about this because of course I never say never. But I don’t know. And I’m the worst person to ask because my slate right now is pretty, pretty full, just like Martin [Freeman, Watson] and all other protagonists involved. So who knows? Maybe someday, if the script is right. And I say ‘the script’, maybe it could be a movie instead of a series. Who knows? But at least not for the time being.”

Louise Brealey alluded to her return in Sherlock season 5. “I know there was originally hope that we’d do a special later. I haven’t heard that’s on or off. To use two clichés, I think it’s on the very retarded and not necessarily on the cards.”

In addition to the main protagonists, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, Molly Hooper and Sian Brooke are eager to reprise their roles in Sherlock Season 5 as Louise Brealey and Eurus Holmes, respectively. However, nothing official has been released in favor of the making of the series.

Suffice it to say there’s a possibility for Sherlock season 5, but we still don’t have any official updates from BBC One. Stay tuned to Devdiscourse for the latest updates on the TV series.
