Netflix’s latest legal drama is now streaming, following in the footsteps of The Lincoln Attorney, adapts a popular book and is almost certainly watching a second season on Netflix, but will it get it? Here’s everything we know about season 2 and how well the show is doing on the service.
The series is based on Helen Wan’s 2013 novel The Partner, starring Arden Cho, Alexandra Turshen, Bradley Gibson, Dominic Sherwood and Rob Heaps.
All 10 episodes of Season 1 landed on Netflix on August 26, 2022.
Partner track Netflix Renewal Status
Has Partner track renewed for season 2?
Official Renewal Status: Not yet renewed.
Our renewal forecast: Too early to call.
As of September 7, 2022, the show has yet to get a thumbs up or down from Netflix, though it’s worth noting that the show is heavily rumored to be getting a second season.
Renewals depend on several factors. There are three internal stats touted as to why a show is being extended or cancelled. These are ‘adjusted display share’, an ‘efficiency score’ and ‘impact value’.
While we as outsiders can’t calculate these stats, as outsiders we can look at Netflix’s top 10 stats, hourly rates, third-party data (including hours watched and completion data), and third-party query sources that we’ll do below.
Netflix’s head of drama, Jinny Howe, spoke to Deadline on August 27, and the article stated that “executives are high on Partner Track, and the series is looking good for a season 2 renewal.”
Used to be Partner track well received on Netflix?
Mixed to positive is how well the show has been received so far by critics and audiences alike.
On the critics’ side, opinions differed with the San Francisco Chronicle citing it as perfect background noise, while Nina Metz of the Chicago Tribune said the show is “enthralling enough to keep you watching.”
The show so far has a splat rating of 56% by critics and 51% by the public. On IMDb, the show is at a 6.8/10.
How good is? Partner track performing on Netflix?
Let’s start with data from Netflix itself through their top 10 site.
|Week period||Number of hours viewed (M)||Rank||Week in Top 10|
|August 21, 2022 to August 28, 2022||16,660,000||7||1|
|August 28, 2022 to September 4, 2022||31,140,000 (+87%)||4||2|
Rightly or wrongly, the show is most similar to the earlier 2022 release of The Lincoln Lawyer. Both are legal dramas (although some argue that the show is more of a romantic comedy) with 10 episodes and relatively close together in running time.
As the chart below shows, the show didn’t have the best start (we added Pieces of hair as another comparison).
We had the debut of Partner track in our Top 10 report that uses CVE stats to see how well the show performed on a level playing field. The show debuted just before Cowboy Bebop but especially behind the will of Archive 81, heart stopper, and In the cold.
Raw top 10s via FlixPatrol can also help us understand how well the show is performing. We can see from the heatmap above that the show performs best in the United States, Canada, the Nordic regions and Eastern Europe.
According to their records, the show peaked on day 3 of the service, but has held up relatively well since then.
What to expect from Partner Track season 2 on Netflix
When the show is renewed? Where can we expect the next show?
By the end of the 10 episodes, Ingrid is disappointed after her mission to get a partner fails at Parsons Valentine & Hunt and is eventually derailed by Jeff Murphy. The same Jeff Murphy she had an occasional relationship with throughout Season 1. That’s even after all her hard work to rise above all the roadblocks that stood in her way during the first season.
Georgia Lee spoke to Deadline shortly after the release of Season 1 and discussed where they would go in Season 2. Here are some of the key points discussed:
- Don’t expect the relationship between Ingrid and Murphy to be restored anytime soon.
- About romances, Lee said: “I would say that Ingrid does not choose Team Murphy or Team Nick or Team Z, but herself. That is her ultimate journey.”
- Lee didn’t rule out the possibility of bringing Nick (played by Rob Heaps) back.
- Expect more from the Rachel-Tyler-Ingrid trio.
