The director also goes by the label “Paprika Girl”. This movie is based on Reddit stories she told on r/fatpeoplestories. The character of Paprika is based on PG and is described as “Hungarian-American Jew with bright red hair. Normal size., who is described as a normal size”.

I can honestly say that the premise and source material (Reddit) make this one of the most “WTH, Japan?” for every anime I’ve ever read about.

twitter.com/PaprikaGirl_JP/status/1567359783669473280 has a link to the original English novella which you can get on Kindle.

Huh, that’s a really interesting story actually, I think this is ultimately no different from an adaptation of a Narou story, except she’s directing her own adaptation.

Edit: After seeing AsleepBySunset’s comment I went to read the reddit post, that’s MUCH meaner and more disgusting than I thought it was just the comments

I just read the reddit post and it’s literally just a cyberbullying story, painting Chibiham as a freak you can stare at, to referring to her as “planet-sized”. I assume the author is the “good weeaboo learning the language and culture” archetype while chibiham is the “incompetent fat and ugly weeaboo”. Unless there’s a twist at the end, I’m incredibly sad that such a thing exists.

I might flip it over again to see how disappointed I am in humanity.

Yes, I wonder if this will be stopped before it sees the light of day. Just because the director is an American doesn’t mean anyone should give this shit a chance to be racist/sexist/etc-ist.

Thank you. I hate this. The premise is disgusting, the character designs are ridiculous, and everything about the plot’s origins turns my stomach. No.

I wanted to be optimistic about this because works taken from internet stories can be funny, but after seeing that reddit post, I’m actively avoiding this sidewalk litter. I can’t imagine having so much ill will towards a family member just because they are heavy. If nothing else, I’m glad the screening is limited to a small theater hall; rest assured, few will ever have the displeasure of looking at it.

It will not. You know it won’t happen. if EX-ARM could get past the post-production stage just like this, and much more.

Things may seem different in America, where most of the country is overweight, but in Japan, being overweight is very much frowned upon. It takes up a lot of precious space on narrow rail cars, malls and shops and is annoying for everyone. Japan passed a Metabo law in 2008 that ran until 2015 to help turn this around, effectively punishing people for being fat and fined their employer or local government if citizens failed to maintain a healthy BMI. to keep. Japan has one of the lowest obesity rates, so it seemed to be very effective here.

George Carlin would laugh at this, I think.

Does this qualify as the first official Reddit anime? We have anime from 2ch and other Japanese forums, but this might be the first time Reddit stories get an anime.

I’ve read quite a few of the Reddit chapters, and from what I’ve gathered, it seems like something you’d see popping up years ago when things like Scott Pilgrim and Megatokyo were huge. Given the dates of those old posts, I don’t think it’s that far off. It’s actually about an American girl in Japan with her stereotypical cringy, fat, weeaboo niece who gets involved in silly and funny situations. All ostensibly based on true stories, with a certain amount of embellishment. It leans on a lot of American stereotypes that Japan has about us and cringe at humor. Although not all chapters take place in Japan. The School of HAMS spin-off is a prequel set during their high school years in rural America. I think I liked the prequel more than the main series to be honest. I could tell it was quite funny, although mo-cap CG isn’t great so I don’t know how they will do comedic timing and what not.

It’s not surprising that some people are crazy. It’s basically a giant middle finger for certain groups. You’ll enjoy this, whichever side of that fence you’re on. If you liked those old shows that put the finger on political correctness like The Simpsons, Duckman, Seinfeld, South Park, MadTV, Married With Children, George Carlin, old SNL, and so on, you’ll probably like this because it’s those mixed with the Ameri-Manga style of webcomics. Two characters, Fatterina and Flaberella, are basically the personification of Tumblr/Twitter artists who take the art of others and ‘fix’ it by changing its skin colour/clothing/weight. They were the most obnoxious characters I’ve read yet, but that’s just because they were so accurate to certain posts I’ve seen online.
