Claflin College students earned a spot in the 34th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National Championship Qualifying Tournament.
HCASC, America’s premier academic competition among HBCUs, gathers each year more than 250 HBCU students, faculty, presidents and union representatives for a competition that uniquely combines educational experiences. and personal experiences outside the classroom.
After advancing to the HCASC National Qualifying Tournament in February, Claflin is one of 32 teams competing at American Honda’s campus in Torrance, Calif., for the HCASC National Championship and a $75,000 scholarship. from Honda.
This is the 23rd year that Claflin has participated in the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge. Claflin’s team fell to the final stage.
Claflin celebrates SC women in music
Otiana Thompson, a senior majoring in Africana Studies from Columbia; Ian Adams, a computer science freshman from Port Antonio, SC; Zharia Casteal, a senior majoring in history from Orangeburg, and Charles Wofford, a political science sophomore from Nesbit, Miss., are Claflin. Dr. Andre E. Brooks‐Key will advise the group.

“We are excited to compete again on the national stage for the first time since 2014, with the goal of putting Claflin University back on the HCASC map,” said Otiana Thompson, team captain.
“We are a well-rounded team with great chemistry that represents a lively family and we are grateful for all the support we have received from the school community. We have spent hours studying and preparing for this opportunity and we hope we can make our campus proud. But we would not have come this far without the hard work and dedication of our instructors, Dr. Andre Brooks-Key and Dr. Catherine Adams whose guidance and encouragement helped us believe in this dream and help me as a champion to establish the foundation. for future teams. I don’t buy this company or experience for anything, we’re definitely locked in for life.
Thompson has been the team captain for the past three years.
Claflin alumni connect with students
The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge is a year-long program that celebrates black excellence and showcases the academic talents of top HBCU students from across the country. Teams of four students will face off in a head-to-head competition and must quickly answer questions about history, science, literature, religion, math, art, pop culture and sports.
HCASC encourages students to expand their knowledge on a wide range of topics and also helps develop their leadership and teamwork skills. With the opportunity to compete against students from other HBCUs, participants build friendships, have mentorship opportunities with HCASC alumni, and make “friends for life.”
In addition to the competition, Honda offers development seminars aimed at enhancing the professional skills and motivation of students.

This year, Honda will award more than $400,000 in scholarships to HBCUs including many schools that use the grants to pay for student tuition. More than 145,000 students have competed in HCASC since the school’s inception in 1989.
