‘Baptism by Fire’ – Boruto Maga Chapter 74 Review

boruto manga Number 74, titled ‘Baptism by Fire’, was… well, it was a manga chapter. Sigh!

I don’t know if the current arc is boring or if the boruto manga should switch to biweekly releases instead of monthly to make the current pace make sense. Waiting a whole month for a chapter that pushes the story forward at a snail’s pace and contains a lot of talk is disappointing. From what I know, apparently, the sale of the boruto manga are not great. And you know what? I don’t see the said sales going up anytime soon if the tempo and story issues aren’t resolved.

The current threat to Konoha happens to be a female cyborg named Eida who can make other people fall in love with her. To deal with such a situation, Kawaki and Boruto (who are immune to Eida’s abilities) are ordered to live with Eida in an expensive house and prevent her from turning against Konoha. Like what the hell is this all about?

When the fandom hype for the upcoming manga adaptation of the Sasuke Retsuden spin-off novel is higher than the main boruto manga series, you know something is wrong.

‘Baptism by Fire’ opened with Eida, Daemon and Amado arriving at the Konoha train station. Immediately a group of people fell in love with Eida. Even Sai, who came to the station with Shikamaru to greet the new “guests”, liked her. I’m a bit interested in how Naruto and Sasuke would react around Eida. Shikamaru can remain calm under her influence, even though he can’t actually attack her. Would Naruto and Sasuke have a similar reaction? hmm. I would like to know the answer.

The scene at the station showed that Eida can fly. She told Code she had skills she wouldn’t reveal. Since Amado had created the cyborgs to fight the Otsutsuki, it also made sense that some of Amado’s creations could fly. Now that Kawaki and Boruto have Otsutsuki DNA, those two should be using their flying skills soon enough.

As for the house where Eida will be staying, I didn’t expect it to be so far removed from the rest of the homes in Konoha. I expected Shikamaru to keep Eida within the village as it might offend her to isolate her (in such a way) from the rest of society. Anyway, I think she’s just interested in Kawaki falling in love with her right now. (Again, what kind of story is this?!)

If the creative team is so adamant about having chapters with lots of dialogue, I wish those conversations were really interesting. Where is the conversation between Naruto and Hinata about letting Boruto, their child, stay with someone like Eida? I understand that Boruto and Kawaki would be under constant surveillance, but still, such a mission would make Naruto and Hinata uncomfortable, right? I would have loved to have seen those two talk about it.

Kawaki is clearly not a fan of the current situation. And I don’t blame him. Not only did he have to be cordial to Eida (who has a crush on him), but he also had to be wary as he felt Momoshiki’s ghost clinging to Boruto. The fact that Daemon could take out both Boruto and Kawaki with one strike didn’t help Kawaki warm up to stick with Eida either.

Daemon is believed to be stronger than Jigen, but weaker than Isshiki. So it’s understandable that he’s stronger than the current versions of Kawaki and Boruto (who still need time to dive into their true Otsutsuki potential). Daemon being able to react to and also stop the black bars Kawaki threw at him was impressive. Because of his stubbornness, I look forward to seeing how Daemon will continue to interact with Kawaki and Boruto. As for Eida, she can’t even string together a coherent sentence when Kawaki is around.

‘Baptism by Fire’ also featured scenes showing Eida’s powers affecting a bunch of other young ninjas and Konohamaru. Chocho and Inojin were hit hard. It was funny to watch them lose control because of their admiration for Eida. But that said, it was disappointing to see Mitsuki falling under Eida’s spell as well.

When it comes to Mitsuki and his overall role in the main story, the fan theory that he might be related to the Otsutsuki had done a lot of work to keep his character interesting. But the current manga chapter destroyed that theory. At the moment, Mitsuki has nothing of interest to him in the manga. And as a Mitsuki fan, that’s sad to see.

Salad did at least a little better. She and Shikadai seemed unaffected by Eida’s ability. According to Salad, it could be that she and Shikadai Eida couldn’t see well… ?).

Perhaps Salad and Shikadai would react differently if they got closer to Eida and thought about attacking her? Fans are already coming up with new fan theories to explain why Salad and Shikadai weren’t in love with Eida, unlike Chocho, Inojin, and Mitsuki.

Amado is supposed to tell Naruto and Shikamaru everything he knew. So hopefully in the next issue we’ll get some explanations about Eida’s powers. i really want the boruto manga series become interesting again.

If I gave my two cents, I wouldn’t be surprised if Eida’s ability to make people fall in love with her was related to eye contact. I think as long as you don’t make eye contact with Eida, you’ll be fine. If true, that could mean things like smoke bombs or creating complete darkness might give you a better chance of fighting her.

As for Konohamaru’s reaction when seeing Eida, I think we all expected his reaction to be the most comedic. The manga chapter delivered just that.

How about ‘Baptism by Fire’? What do you think of Boruto, Kawaki, Eida and Daemon living together?
